The ceremonial announcement of Charles as King of England was held at St James’s Palace on Saturday (10/9/2022) local time. He is now officially King Charles III to lead the United Kingdom and its commonwealths.

Reporting from The Guardian, Saturday (10/9/2022), the ceremony was attended by members of the Accession Council – a ceremonial body made up of royals, political and religious figures, which included Queen Camilla, Prince William, British Prime Minister Liz Truss, as well as cabinet members and shadow cabinet members, and the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Apart from Truss, six other former British PMs including Boris Johnson and Theresa May, also attended the ceremony. The accession ceremony is a historic event that dates back centuries. But, for the first time, it was broadcast on television.

The Speaker of the House of Commons and President of the House of Lords in the British parliament, Penny Mordaunt, who presided over the ceremony began by symbolically announcing the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

“It is my sad duty to inform you that Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022, at Balmoral Castle,” Mordaunt said to the Accession Council members.

There were 700 members of the Accession Council, but only about 250 people reportedly attended. The limited capacity of the venue meant that letters were required for members who wished to attend but were no longer active in public office.

The Clerk of the Privy Council at the Accession Council, Richard Tilbrook, then presented Charles as the new King of England, with the title King Charles III.

“That God Almighty be pleased to have mercy on the late sovereign Queen Elizabeth II of blessed and glorified memory, who by her death, the crown of Great Britain and Northern Ireland solely and by right came to Prince Charles, Philip Arthur George,” Tilbrook said.

“Therefore, we, the spiritual and temporal sovereigns of this realm, and the members of the House of Commons together with the other members of the late Her Majesty’s Privy Council and representatives of the realms and territories, councillors, Londoners and others, with one voice and consent of the tongue and heart publish and declare that Prince Charles Philip Arthur George is now, by the death of our late sovereign, our only rightful Lord,” He added.

“Charles III, by the grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of the other kingdoms and territories, King, head of the commonwealth, defender of allegiance, to whom we give humble allegiance and obedience,” Tilbrook said.

“God Save the King,” Tilbrook added, to which the Accession Council members replied in kind.

King Charles III, Britain’s Oldest King

Legitimate! King Charles III Officially Ruled the British Monarchy

At 73 years old, King Charles III became the oldest person to receive the throne in British history. Before King Charles III, King William IV was the oldest monarch in history who ascended the throne at the age of 64 in 1830.

After being confirmed as King of England, here is the full declaration of King Charles III’s proclamation process.

Nobles, ladies, and gentlemen.

It is my saddest duty to announce to you the death of my beloved Mother, the Queen.

I know how deeply you, the whole Nation – and I think I can say the whole world – sympathize with me in the irreparable loss we have all suffered.

It is the greatest comfort to me to receive the sympathy expressed by so many of my brothers and sisters and that such overwhelming affection and support should be extended to our entire family in our loss.

To all of us as a family, like this kingdom and the wider family of nations of which she was a part, my Mother set an example of lifelong love and selfless service.

My mother’s reign is unequaled in its duration, dedication and devotion. Even as we grieve, we give thanks for this most faithful life.

I am well aware of this great legacy and of the heavy duties and responsibilities of the Sovereignty that have now been bestowed upon me. In taking on this responsibility, I will endeavor to follow the inspiring example I have set in upholding constitutional government and promoting the peace, harmony and prosperity of the people of these Islands and Commonwealth territories and possessions around the world.

In this cause, I know that I will be upheld by the affection and loyalty of the people whose Sovereignty I have assumed, and that in the discharge of these duties I will be guided by the counsel of an elected parliament. In all of this, I was greatly encouraged by the constant support of my beloved wife.

I take this opportunity to declare my willingness and intention to continue the tradition of handing over my hereditary income, including assets, to my Government for the benefit of all, in return for the Sovereign Grant, which supports my official duties as head of state and leader of the nation.

And in carrying out the arduous task that has been bestowed upon me, and to which I now dedicate the rest of my life, I pray for the guidance and help of Almighty God.

Congratulations to King Charles III, on his inauguration as King of England. God Save the King.
