Owned by the United States
The island, which is still part of the Northern Marianas, is located in the western Pacific Ocean. The island is a territory of the U.S. commonwealth. Before the United States owned it, the island had changed hands. In 1565-1899 the island was once controlled by the Spanish. Then in 1899-1914 changed hands to Germany, and then in 1920 owned by Japan.
Saipan Was a Silent Witness to World War II
Japan took control of the island shortly after the US seized it in 1944. During World War II, the island was a battlefield for American and Japanese troops in the Pacific region. At least 3,500 American troops and 30,000 Japanese were killed in the war.
United States Air Base
From 1953 to 1962 the island became an important air base for American Air Force forces. It was also the headquarters of the United Nations Trust Area in the American-administered Pacific Islands from 1962 to 1986.

Saipan Has Fertile Soil
Saipan is famous for its fertile soil for agriculture. No wonder there is a place to cultivate subsistence crops such as bananas, cassava, breadfruit, yams and taro.
Relying on Tourism
The island relies on tourism for its economy. Of course the main attraction is beach tourism. Usually tourists from abroad come to this place for snorkeling and diving. In addition to supporting facilities such as a restaurant, lodging and a well-equipped bar, Saipan also has an international airport as well as a commercial pier.
