Biography

Joran van der Sloot is the accused in the murder case of Stephany Tatiana Flores Ramires. He was also charged with fraud and extortion in relation to Natalee Holloway’s whereabouts. Van der Sloot is a Dutch citizen. In 1990 he and his family moved to Aruba. His father was a lawyer and at that time received a contract to be a judge for 5 years in Aruba.

In 2005 Natalee Holloway vacationed on the island of Aruba with friends. They met Van der Sloot while gambling at a casino and invited him to meet at a bar called Carlos ‘n Charlie’s the next day. The next day they met as planned. That night Natalee’s friends saw her getting into a car with the Van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers after drinking in a bar.

The next day, when Natalee did not return to the hotel where she was staying, the police carried out a search all over the island. A week later police arrested Van der Sloot and his friends who were last seen leaving with Natalee that night. On September 3, 2005 they were released due to lack of evidence. Van der Sloot was asked to remain in Dutch territory pending the results of the investigation. On September 14, 2005 travel restrictions for Van der Sloot. In April 2007 a book entitled De Zaak Natalee Holloway (The Case of Natalee Holloway) by Van der Sloot was published in the Netherlands. On 21 November 2007 Van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers were rearrested in Arnhem Netherlands, but were later released without charge.

In May 2010 Van der Sloot was indicted in Alabama for attempted extortion of the Holloway family. Van der Sloot received a $15,000 advance for information on the whereabouts of Natalee’s body. The money was used to finance a gambling trip to South America, where he was again involved in a crime case, namely the murder of Stephany Tatiana Flores Ramires. Van der Sloot confessed to being Flores Ramires’ killer and was indicted on 2 counts. He was sentenced to 28 years in prison at Piedras Gordas Prison.
