The news of Franz Beckenbauer’s death has been confirmed by the German Press Agency (DPA) on Monday, January 8, 2024. The man nicknamed “Der Kaiser” or “The Emperor” passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2024. It was reported a few weeks ago that the condition of the Bayern Munich legend was deteriorating.
The former defender, who turned 78 on September 11, had undergone heart surgeries in 2016 and 2017. The family stated that Beckenbauer peacefully passed away, expressing deep sorrow in their announcement.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our husband and father, Franz Beckenbauer, in his sleep yesterday (Sunday),” read the family’s statement.
Beckenbauer’s representatives also requested the public to mourn in peace and not to pose any questions about the legend’s condition before further statements are made. Throughout his life, Beckenbauer can be regarded as one of the greatest legends worldwide, even considered the number one in the German national team.
