supermodel Gigi Hadid and her friend Leah McCarthy were apprehended last week while vacationing on the beautiful Cayman Islands. The news, however, only came to light today, Wednesday, July 19, 2023.
Gigi Hadid, the 28-year-old model, has been subsequently released, and her representatives have issued a statement clarifying the situation. According to her spokesperson, Gigi was in possession of marijuana (ganja), which she had legally purchased in New York City with a valid medical license. Furthermore, it was revealed that the use of medical marijuana has been legal in the Grand Cayman since 2017. The spokesperson elaborated that Gigi Hadid had been simply enjoying her time on the island.
The representative stressed that Gigi’s marijuana purchase during her vacation in the Cayman Islands was entirely lawful and within the bounds of her medical license. “Gigi legally obtained it in NYC with a medical license, and her records remain clear,” the statement read.
Following the incident, Hadid was released on bail and has since been relishing the remainder of her vacation. The authorities also imposed a fine of $1,000 after she pleaded guilty to the charges on July 12, 2023.
Gigi Hadid Accused of Marijuana Importation
The news of the international model’s arrest initially broke through the local Cayman Island newspaper, Cayman Mal Road. According to the report, on Tuesday, July 10, 2023, a private plane carrying Gigi Hadid and Leah McCarthy landed at the Owen Roberts International Airport Terminal in the Cayman Islands from the United States.
As is customary for all passengers, Hadid and McCarthy, along with their luggage, underwent scanning and customs inspection at the local Customs counter. During this process, a small quantity of marijuana and related paraphernalia were discovered in their baggage.
Subsequently, Gigi Hadid and her companion were apprehended and taken to a holding facility with charges of importing marijuana and related consumption equipment.
Two days after their arrest, the mother-of-one and her friend appeared at the Summary Court, where they pleaded guilty to the charges. As a result, both Gigi Hadid and Leah McCarthy were fined $1,000 each, equivalent to approximately Rp15 million.
The incident has sparked discussions regarding the use and regulations surrounding marijuana both in the United States and the Cayman Islands, where it has been legalized for medical purposes. As the news continues to draw attention, Gigi Hadid’s legal team remains committed to clarifying the situation and upholding her rights during this process.
